What I’m Doing to Make Time for Myself

Making time for ourselves can be such a challenge. I'm sure many of us have felt like we no longer have hobbies or passions anymore since motherhood started consuming us. Making time for ourselves is important. We have to do it. Here's what I'm doing to make time for myself to inspire you to try something new!

Motherhood is demanding.

As a mom, our job never ends. We are on duty 24 hours a day. We sacrificially serve our families, we train our children and many of us are schooling them as well. Many times our service goes unnoticed because it simply comes with the job title.

The greatest job on the earth, if I may add.

While we may love our job, it can be draining both physically and emotionally. And if we are honest, mentally too. Depending on the season it may be one or all of those combined!

Just like with any other job out there, moms can face burnout. When we begin to be resentful, impatient, snappy, unhappy and frustrated with all that is on our plate we need to take a step back and examine what is going on in our heart.

Many times, we will find that we are in need of some alone time doing something that fills up our souls. Something that replenishes our spirit so that we can pour out once again. I’m not talking about things like scrolling our Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest feed here. When we are not filling up ourselves with meaningful things that fill our soul, we are going to run dry and have nothing else to offer our families.

Finding time in our day to make time for ourselves must a priority. We make time for what is important to us. It is important to sit down with your planner, or a pen and paper and write down everything that you do in a day and find time in there somewhere when  you can step away and do something that inspires you. The time is there if you are intentional about finding or making it.

After you find that time, write down your passions, hobbies or new things that you want to try. What things are going to make you energized to pour out to your family again? This is going to look differently for us all. Just remember that internet time isn’t life giving. It’s mind numbing and a way to escape. You aren’t going to walk away from Pinterest scrolling ready to tackle your bedtime routine.

For me, I love to read. I love taking advantage of kindle sales or grabbing a paperback book that’s finally on sale. I also ask for Amish books for most gifts. I love getting lost in an Amish novel! Not much can beat a good book.

I also love to sit down and blog. Writing is a way to be creative. I loved writing in high school, I’ve won creative writing contests and worked on both my high school and college newspapers. You can say it’s been in my blood all my life. And now in this stage in life, writing makes me feel like I have a brain again after the years of sleepless nights.

Sewing is another one of my passions. I don’t do it nearly as often as I’d like these days. Creating something new is life giving. It fuels our souls.

Recently I’ve decided to learn creative lettering. This has been so much fun and I surprisingly love it! It is a relaxing hobby that I can do late into the night when I have no mental energy left to read, write or sew. I can sit in my bed practicing my lettering while I wait for my husband to come home. This is the best part! It’s a relaxing, life giving, soul filling hobby. That can’t be beat and anyone can do it!

You don’t need many supplies to get started. There are so many free tutorials out there to help you learn what letting style you are interested in. I started with CreativLei’s 31 Days to Love Your Lettering. In this series, you will learn many different styles of creative lettering to learn what you like best. I am currently loving brush letter and calligraphy.

Tombow Dual Brush Pens

These pens are so much fun! I love the pop of color they have. They write so smoothly and are easy to use. I definitely recommend Tombow!

Calligraphy Pen Set

I love these! They are similar to the dip nib pens but without the dipping! There’s no mess and they are easy to use and assemble. I am loving the different stroke sizes. This set certainly has everything that you need to create beautiful pieces of art!

This new hobby makes me happy! I get excited to find time in my day to practice. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes after creating something new.  I am a better mama because I take the time for myself throughout the day. If you don’t think you have any hobbies or passions and you are struggling to find something life giving to do for yourself, I definitely recommend creative lettering as a place to start. If you are low on energy, low mental power then this is for you. I know it can be a challenge to find time let alone find an activity that won’t be too strenuous. Creative lettering is worth a try and you might be surprised how much you enjoy it. You are worth it!

I love your blog Anastasia and this is a great article! I also homeschool my 2 boys, who are finishing grades 9 & 11. No matter what age our children are , moms are busy. It is so important to find a corner of the day for ourselves. Even our children need that, especially as they get older and become busy with life’s demands……it is something we can model and teach them. God bless you! 🌸 ☺

Awe, thank you! I so agree. My kids need a break from one another during the day. I love quiet/nap time for that. I hope that they keep it going once they are older as well.

You are so right that we moms need to replenish ourselves! As women and especially moms, I believe we generally tend to give and nurture, but often fail to care for ourselves. Just as in airplane emergency training they teach you to put on your own oxygen mask first, so we must care for ourselves in order to be able to give our best to others.

I like to read before bed, and sometimes on a Sunday afternoon for hours! I also really like Amish novels. I’ve read all of Beverly Lewis’ so far. I also like to do creative activities such as taking photos, scrapbooking the pictures, making something such as wreaths or jewelry, and singing in our church worship band.

Thanks for the reminder to take stock in what we’re spending our time on, and to take time for ourselves.

Yay another Beverly Lewis fan! I’m always sad when I read through her latest book so fast, ha!

But yes, we do tend to take care of everyone else before ourselves which then helps no one in return. I’m trying to devout Sunday’s to just a day of rest. Stepping back from the blogging work and just read or do some creative lettering. Soaking in quiet and rest once a week. We need it as moms!

      Thanks for sharing with me!
