Are you looking for the magic spell that will change your life and make everything all fantastic? Are you waiting for your fairy godmother to show up with her wand and change your circumstances? Isn’t that why we are drawn to Disney movies? We want that happy ending and the sparkle that the characters seem to have. We want their happy ending for our own lives. Inside we crave the fun loving, happy, easy life instead of our own heartbreak, trials, and problems.
We want our lives to change.
We want better marriages, more obedient kids, perfect friends.
We want a better job, a better house, a better car, the American dream.
We want to be better ourselves. We want the perfect body, a flatter stomach, the coveted leg gap, the perfect hair (all those Disney princesses have amazing hair, don’t they?!), we want to be the happy, joyful friend, to be supermom, and to always say the right things at the right moment.
We want it bad. We envy those who seem to have it all. We grab a chocolate bar and pop in another Disney DVD to soothe our raw emotions.
It’s time to stop wallowing in jealousy and envy. It’s time to stop wishing for what we don’t have and may never have. This behavior is getting us nowhere, is it?
We still need to shed the extra weight, our hair is still a hot mess, we still speak our minds more than we should, we still blow it with our kids and husband.
Grace has the power to change your life.
Will you still do all of the above? Yes.
Because no one has it all together. It may appear that way on the outside from your view but you don’t see what is going on inside their lives, behind their closed doors. I’ve seen the perfect marriages end in bitter divorces, I’ve seen Pastors destroy a church, their marriage and others around them, I’ve seen parents who seemed to be doing it all right on the outside still lose their kids to the world. No one is perfect. Reality check: it’s only like that in the movies.
How to Let Grace Change Your Life
You have to break the cycle of comparing your life, your body, your legs, your hair, your house, kids and marriage to those around you. It does nothing but make you feel like a failure.
Keep your eyes on your own path.
When you live in a constant state of awe over the power of grace in your life, you will live in a state of gratitude. Your eyes are taken off of you and your circumstances and instead they are placed on the Lord. You start to see the blessings all around you instead of focusing on what stinks in your life.
You are a sinner saved by grace. Forgiven, justified and set apart. You are a daughter of the King. Made whole through His shed blood.
Don’t forget it! Thank God often for His grace!
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Change the Way You Think
You don’t have to stay stuck. You can change your thought patterns and bad habits through grace. While the change make look different than what you thought, it’s still a change. For example, you wish you could have a better, happier marriage. So you are constantly thinking if only your husband would change, if only he could be more like someone else. Changing the way you think, becoming a more gracious wife, following his lead will end with you thriving as a wife resulting in a happier marriage. Was it your husband who changed? Probably not. It’s you.
The moment you tell yourself that you cannot change is the moment you stop trying. Imperfect progress is the key. Slow and steady. You will mess up and need to give yourself grace on a daily basis. But that’s the amazing thing about God and His grace – it’s never ending and never changing!
Through grace, you can change! Believe that you can change and conquer the sinful habits in your life and you will.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Every day choose gratitude. God has given you that house, that car, that personality, that crazy hair and thicker thighs. You are the mother He gave your kids and the wife to your husband. God purposefully created you the way He did.
You may be able to curb some bad habits, or be frugal to save for a better house or car but if your heart isn’t right they won’t be enough for you when you have them. You’ll always be jealous of what someone else has.
You can change your life when you choose gratitude for you already have.
God will always give you grace for where you are. He does want to give you good things but what He has for you needs to be enough.
I love the promises in Psalm 84! If you are feeling depressed over the things in your life, whether it’s rare trail or you feel like you can never catch a break, I encourage you to read it. Let His grace refresh your soul.
Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
Jealousy, envy, depression all have a way of silencing you. They have a way of cutting you off from friends and fellowship. We let Satan tell us that we aren’t good enough to be around so and so. Before we know we no longer serve the Lord. We are too deep into our pity party of how lackluster our life is to be useable.
When we don’t forget how God’s grace changed our lives, it emboldens us to tell others. We get busy being a bold witness.
What happens when you are too busy serving? You stop focusing on how your life isn’t like the Disney movies. Who has the time?
God wants us to be doers of the Word (James 1:22).
The life-changing effect of grace in your life displays itself in your service.
Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
We still have access to that very same great grace that was given to the apostles? Once you realize this truth, it will change your life!
Not literally, but to yourself. Grace is a big deal. So big that God ended the whole Bible with reminding us of His grace.
His grace is always with you.
Revelation 22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
God didn’t want us to forget His grace, He wants us to be comforted by His grace, He wants His grace to change our lives and to motivate us.
You can have a happier life. You can be content with what you have. All by God’s grace. You can be a gracious woman, friend, mother, and wife. Will your life start looking like a Disney movie? Nope! Will it look like the family down the street? Nope! It’ll be so much better! It’ll be your life and you can own it. You won’t be chained down to those thoughts anymore. And that my friend, is a beautiful life. A grace-filled life. Now that is the life changing effect of grace. That is something worth desiring and working for.
Lord, may your grace change our lives!
