Do you think that doodling, coloring or painting during your quiet time is a sin? I’ve been thinking about this much more recently since the Bible journaling frenzy has been sweeping through. Can you do Bible journaling and it not be a sin?
Bible journaling is the process in which you draw, doodle, paint or color in your actually Bible.
For many people it’s a deeper way to connect or express what it is that the Lord is teaching you through your Bible reading.
Some people are more visual than others, others want to connect deeper with the scripture, other’s want to linger longer over the Word, for others they find coloring or journaling relaxing so why not relax while journaling Scripture.
When we engage more of our senses while learning something we are more apt to remember it. Bible journaling is a way to engage more senses.
I think that this can become a sin in your life if you aren’t careful. Just like with anything else. If you have a talent or receive praise for anything you’ve done there is always going to be a chance that you can let pride into your heart and glory as if it was only you. Leaving the Lord by the way side.
1 Corinthians 4:7 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?
The Lord gives you all of your talents and abilities. Everything that you are able to do is a gift from Him.
When you show off our Bible journaling looking for praise, likes, comments you are glorifying yourself and that is when it becomes a sin.
Sin separates us from the Lord. He still loves us, but He wants the glory, He wants us to remember that He gave us our talents.
So what does this mean for those who want to start Bible journaling? For those who are too nervous that they will be sinning or who think they could never do it as good as so and so from Instagram?
You can Bible journal without sinning.
Don’t let pride take place. Always be on the look for sin in your heart. Examine your motives before posting or showing off.
Don’t compare yourself. You can’t compare your talent to someone else’s, it’s simply not a wise thing to do. We are all in a stage in life. You can’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle or end. If you are always focusing on someone else you are going to steal your joy away and never get started. Which leads me to the next point.
Don’t let fear hold you back. Let faith be bigger than your fear. Is it nerve wracking to try something new? Yes, but you’ll never achieve anything great if you are staying in your comfort zone.
As Nike says, just do it!
