Many parents reward their kids for doing their chores, doing well in school, they reward them for behaving well. Children respond very well to rewards and incentives. Therefore, parents utilize them in our favor.
But it’s not just children who respond well to rewards. Adults do as well. If you think about it, our husband’s are rewarded for a job well done with their paycheck. Wives and mothers flourish when they are given praise and gratitude for their work that they do around the home.
It is human nature to respond to rewards. Everyone needs a little push once in awhile.
The same is true in our journey to make over our mornings. We need to motivate ourselves in order to have lasting success. Our habits are not going to change over night, so we need an incentive to keep at our goals. In many of our cases, our goal is waking up earlier in order to use our mornings well to live more intentionally doing those things that we love to.
But we all know the struggle with the snooze button, don’t we? Just 5 more minutes.
Yet those 5 more minutes turns into an extra half hour – of no-so-good-rest. Then we wake up already behind and beating ourselves up. The temptation of the snooze button is hard to overcome.
We need an incentive to get up! We need an incentive to keep pluggin away at our goals!
It is okay to motivate ourselves with rewards.
Peace while you read your Bible and pray.
Eating your breakfast without having to share it. Amen?
Since our main reason for making over our mornings is to live with intention doing those things which we hold most important, internal motivators are also important to consider here.
The physical reward of doing something you like is critical, but there is also a mental aspect that carries equal weight. -MYOM workbook, page 16
We need to remind ourselves of the why behind our goals. When we have a deeper foundation to draw from we can more easily motivate ourselves.
When you really want to stay in bed until a child wakes you for breakfast, reminding yourself of the benefits to yourself and your family of you getting up early to replenish your soul will motivate you to get moving.
Success in a particular area.
Filled up on the Word so you can better serve your family.
Encouraging others through your service.
Weight loss or healthier lifestyle.
We need to keep this list handy. So write it out and place it somewhere where you can see it often. When the going gets tough you will need to remind yourself of the rewards that motivate you.
Needing a reward, whether external or internal, isn’t degrading but essential to your success.
Whether you want to loose weight, memorize more verses or spend more time on your side business having an incentive will keep you going as you strive for the end reward.
I’ve only scratched the surface here with ideas! Your incentives will be specific to your goals.

My external incentives are coffee, exercise, writing and time alone for my blogging. My internal ones are the joy and fulfillment I get from working on blog knowing I’m encouraging woman and keeping myself accountable. Also the sense of knowing I wont be a distracted mama in the morning with my kids and can connect better with them. Those incentives keep me going!
