Life is all about seasons. As busy mom’s our schedules change faster than we can blink.
New babies. Child rearing. Homeschooling. Hospitality. Church responsibilities. Spending time with our man. How do we fit in quiet time with the Lord?
When I was first married, my husband worked long hours and was still finishing up college. We also lived 4 hours away from family and friends. I had a lot of time on my hands. It was easy to make time to read my Bible. Fast forward one year and we had a newborn. Talk about a game changer! I was lucky to catch a nap when he napped. Dinner didn’t happen till the baby went to bed! Days carried on and I’d wonder when was the last time I had read my Bible.
Fast forward another year and we added another new baby. A very high needs baby who never slept. Again I had let my Bible reading slip. It was at this time that I knew I needed to change how I viewed my devotions. Gone were the quiet times I once had, I was in exhausted Mama mode that needed to get into God’s Word. No matter how little or much I could get in. I needed it. My family needed me to be reading the Scriptures.
Mama’s, we have a powerful force in the home. Your days will run much smoother if you fill up on God’s Word every day. We have to make it a priority in our days. We are more gracious, more kind and more gentle when we have met with Jesus.
How to study your Bible in the midst of motherhood:
1. Give up perfection.
During a busy season, your time with the Lord isn’t going to look like it once did or what it will look like again in the future. Maybe you won’t be able to fit in studying out verses but you can read a few verses as you sit in line at a drive thru. Just do what you can, when you can. It’s okay to have interruptions during your Bible reading, teach the little ones that it’s important to play alone while you’re reading but don’t give up or become frustrated when they do interrupt you with their needs or little things that they just can’t wait to tell you. Remember that it’s important for our littles to see us spending time with Jesus. It will be an easier thing for them to do themselves one day.
Remember that the Lord is pleased with our efforts. He wants us to be filled up with Him so we can pour out ourselves to our families. Give yourself your grace.
2. Soak in the Scriptures when you can.
Listen to the Bible as you prepare a meal. Tape up index cards with Bible verses around the house that you want to meditate on. If you have a nursing baby, read the Bible on your phone while you’re feeding.
3. Have accountability.
Ask your husband. Ask your friend. Join a Bible study, whether by email, text messages, a Facebook group, or going to someone’s house every week. Surround yourself with others who desire to study out the Word. Follow a reading plan to keep you on track.
4. Make it fun!
Bible reading doesn’t have to be boring! It doesn’t have to be a chore! The more you read and get to know Christ the more of Him you will desire. What gets you excited? Is it the socialization of a Bible study group? Is it a fun, new journaling notebook? Colorful Gel Pens to underline and write with? Washi Tape to decorate your notebook? A hot cup of coffee to sip while reading? Whatever it is for you, do it! Make your time with Lord something that you look forward to.
My time with the Lord every day often looks different. Someday’s the kids play nice and let me read quietly to myself for a little while. Sometimes, often times, they don’t. Some days it’s reading on my phone after a trying day. The point is to get into the Bible every day.
2 years ago I started following the Love God Greatly blog which puts out Bible studies in 8-week increments. They are topical or book studies. They are always convicting and inspiring. They have helped me stay on track and stay motivated. Love God Greatly puts out organized reading plans, study notes and blog posts for each of their studies.
I often study with friends through email groups, text messages or getting together. Here at the blog, I plan on following the studies with you! Every Monday join me as we study the Scriptures together! Today starts our 8-week study of Psalm 119. I hope you’ll join me! Head over to Love God Greatly to get all the materials you need or check them out on YouVersion.
