Kids don’t know how to entertain themselves or be content to just run around in the backyard.
They want the newest tablet game to entertain them. They want another show to watch or movie to enjoy.
They want to sit on the couch and be entertained.
And if parents do send them outside, they sit and mope out there not knowing what to do with themselves.
Today’s kids have are lacking imagination.
Who’s fault is that?
It’s the parent’s fault. We are failing our children if we are not inspiring their imagination. Parent’s are taking the lazy route, the easy way of parenting. They are letting the iPads, phones, video games and television babysit their kids.
It is the parent’s job to inspire imagination.
How to Inspire Imagination in Your Kids
Take time to read living books to your children. Enjoy the classics with them. Take time to talk about the story. Bring it to life with them as you read and discuss.
Have living books available for them.
Don’t just spend all your time reading out loud to your kids, allow them time to read to themselves. Leave living books around the house for them enjoy. Make reading time a non-negotiable in your day. You will be amazed at how they want to pretend to play the stories that they read.
Teach them to play.
Have you noticed that first borns need to be taught how to play? Even as small babies we have to model it for them to mimic. The same is true for any playing time. Kids aren’t going to learn to play soccer on their own or freeze tag. If they have been used to the television screen they will need some help in this department at first. But they do catch on pretty quickly because kids love to play!
Now how does this inspire imagination? It get’s their brain working in a way that’s not them vegetating on the couch. They’re being active. If you play different games like Settlers of Catan Junior or Ticket to Ride then they can pretend to play these games later. The ideas inspire them more than you think!
Get them out of the house.
The best place to let your imagination run wild is outside! There is so much more their little minds can come up with when they are in nature. The more they get outside the better their imagination will be.
Another great tip is to have creative toys available for them. Kids do need toys, not just books. Instead of buying the electronic games that entertain them choose toys they have to create games with instead. Toys such as building blocks, legos, dolls, plastic or stuffed animals.
But wait, do parents need to entertain their children all the time then?
Absolutely not! We need to model it for them at first if they aren’t used to it, and then give them tools at their disposal which will inspire their own creativity. It’s our job to give them what they need to be creative with their own childhood games. The more of an imagination they have the less entertaining you need to be doing. You’re working yourself out of a job!
Mama, don’t follow today’s culture. Don’t allow the electronics to steal your kid’s childhood. Let them play, let them run wild, let their imaginations run free. Take some time to inspire your kid’s imagination. It’s your job, it may not be easy, but it’s worth it. Spending that time with your children will not only help you win your child’s heart but also inspires their creativity. What are you waiting for?
