First Grade/ Homeschooling/ Kindergarten

Our Fourth Month of School 2016

It is already time for our next homeschooling post! This is the time of the month that I give my readers a sneak peek into our homeschool days throughout the month. Telling you what we loved, what we didn’t love and what we added. We are going through My Father’s World First Grade as well as their Kindergarten God’s Creation A to Z.

This month was our month before our holiday break. We were committed to going strong but losing steam near the end! We were ready for Thanksgiving to arrive so we could take a month long break. We didn’t take much time off since starting in August so we were ready. We ended on some pretty fun units too, which made it a great note to end on. But because of our eagerness to be done, I failed in the picture department. I hope you enjoy this picture-lite homeschool update!

First Grade

This month we tackled units 12-14. We stretched out a few units because they were subjects my boys just love so we spent extra time on them.

We loved the under the sea unit because we love sea animals. We read a lot of books! They had a blast creating under the sea murals, this unit went right along side our Kindergarten Octopus unit that the Little Guy did.

Along with the under the sea unit we learned about water pressure. We just love the science experiments and this one definitely made them have wide eyes as we discussed how the pressure in water gets strong the deeper you go. I’m pretty sure they asked to do this one a few times. You would think it would get old but alas, it did not.

Our volcano unit we sort of sped through since we tackled volcanoes when the Little Guy did his rock unit. I felt bad that I didn’t notice that the two units would mesh well. I tried to catch them all while I was planning out our entire homeschool year. But they did watch a few new videos on the subject and we read new books that we didn’t cover yet.

Then there was the sun unit, in which we covered the planets. Now this unit is the best. In both MFW Kindergarten and First, the space units have our hearts. My boys LOVE them.

I found some great printables on Pinterest to add in for First grade. They learned some new vocabulary words and we, of course, made a makeshift spacecraft!

We really enjoyed the Magic School Bus books and shows this time around. They had one for each of our units and we split them up to read over the course of the units (they’re kinda long if you read all of the science information along the sides!).

Big Guy also started his Bible Reader and Notebook this month. We were both excited about that! I’m sad I don’t have any pictures to share of it. Next month!

Kindergarten

The Little Guy tackled octopus, ant, moon and sun this month! He is doing so well! He is getting better and better at reading and is loving the fact that he is now doing addition in our Abeka math curriculum. The kids are constantly asking each other math equations now, it’s pretty cute.

The only thing we deviated from this year that we did do last year was the ant farm. I’m not a fan of ants and since they weren’t all that captivating as the butterflies I decided to skip them this time around. It feels like we just did them! (Plus my husband may or may not have thrown out our any farm when we moved, ahem!) He didn’t seem to notice. We actually focused more on bees this year than last year. Our new house is surrounded by bees on the patio so they seem to be more aware and interested in them. We also switched to raw honey so it made sense that bees were a bigger hit this go around. Check our ant unit from last year to see all the fun we had with the ants!

Sadly, I have no pictures to share of fun! I definitely need to do better this next month! We finally got into the meat and potatoes portion of our art curriculum. Both boys really enjoyed finally drawing some real things. Things that they like. The abstract concepts were a little too much for them. I got around to organizing our art board while we were cleaning up our school for the holiday break. I can’t believe how far they’ve come in their art skills just in 14 weeks of art!

That’s it! This month was filled with a lot more fun than we have been having. I was relieved to end on a good note! Hoping for the same positive review for month 5! See you then!

Your turn! Are you going through either MFW First grade or Kindergarten? I’d love to hear what you think of it!
