Social media can be such a pain in the butt, can’t it? You follow all of these amazing bloggers who have great ideas to implement. Your fellow Christians post images of their gorgeous Bible journaling pages, their cute little Bible notebooks, their completely organized prayer journals or boxes. Everyone seems to have it all together, don’t they?
Everyone but you.
You’re over in your comfy chair, feeling like a complete failure for not even reading your Bible lately. You can’t afford a Bible journal or all the supplies that come along with that hobby. You don’t have any spare notebooks around and if you do, they’re all ratty from the kids playing with them. And a prayer journal just pushes you over the edge. People have prayer journals now?? How do they have time to put together such elaborate Bible reading and prayer tools?? Don’t they have kids to raise and a house to clean?
So you don’t do anything at all. Except feel bad about yourself. You’re not talented, artistic, organized enough to do this.
You let the lack of Bible reading supplies hold you back from reading your Bible.
Girl, it is time to shut off the lies circling your head. Turn them off. Speak life. Stop comparing yourself to your artistic friend. Stop comparing yourself to your rich friend. Stop looking at what you don’t have and focus on what you do have. Which is most likely a Bible. And that is all you need to read your Bible.
You don’t need the fancy notebooks.
You don’t need the fancy Bible study books.
You don’t need fancy pens.
You don’t need washi tape.
You don’t need a prayer journal or a journaling Bible.
And you definitely don’t need the guilt of not having them all.
You need just your Bible.
Don’t let the lack of Bible reading supplies stop you from growing closer to the Lord.
Don’t let the lack of Bible reading supplies stop you from feeling the love of God in your life.
Don’t let comparison steal your joy.
Guess what, I’m not artistic, I don’t have a journaling Bible or a prayer journal and I don’t spend hours a week coloring in my quiet time. I’m a busy mama. I have enough time to read His Word, pray for our day and then I’m off to do all the things. Do I like pretty things in my Bible time? You bet. But if I didn’t have them it shouldn’t stop me from reading the Bible. Neither should you.
Some days, all I have time for is reading the Bible on my phone. And that’s okay. I’m not beating myself for that. God didn’t tell us to have and do all of these extras. Are they fun? Probably. But they are just that: extras. Do them if you the time, the money, the desire but don’t wait to dig into the Word if you don’t have them. God never intended us to get our eyes off the Word and onto all these extras.
Maybe it’s time that you shut off the social media screaming in your ear that you aren’t good enough or rich enough. Maybe it’s time to unfollow some people. Maybe it’s time to quiet the comparison. Maybe it’s time to stop running away from God, maybe it’s simply conviction you are feeling that you aren’t reading the Word and not the comparison. It’s definitely time to start reading the Bible and to stop letting the lack of supplies stop you.
